The Beat Divas: Mix It Up<\/strong>

Too many cooks in the kitchen doesn\u2019t seem to bother Mady Kaye, Beth Ullman and Dianne Donovan, aka The Beat Divas. In fact, the trio, who for years performed together as a jazz ensemble, loves engaging with the audience attending their culinary classes at Central Market Cooking School.<\/p>\n

Between recipe demonstrations, the divas sing original tunes like \u201cLittle Bit of Chocolate\u201d and \u201cSweet Potato Jive.\u201d For those who can\u2019t attend a lesson, their wit and harmonies are showcased on a new CD, Dishin\u2019 with the Divas.<\/p>\n

How did you come up with the idea for The Beat Divas?<\/p>\n

Kaye: At rehearsals, all we did was talk about food\u2014where we\u2019ve eaten, where we\u2019re going to eat, what we\u2019ve cooked. We decided to put our love of music and food into one package.<\/p>\n

Do your audiences have any favorite songs?<\/p>\n

Donovan: They like \u201cHog Fat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ullman: And \u201cBlame it on the Devil,\u201d which is a song about a grandmother who poisons her granddaughter\u2019s boyfriend for jilting her, with her devil\u2019s food cake.<\/p>\n

How have your families influenced your cooking?<\/p>\n

Ullman: My grandparents were gourmet cooks, and my grandfather was a big bourbon drinker, so everything had booze in it. Now I don\u2019t like to eat dinner without a glass of wine.<\/p>\n

Donovan: You don\u2019t like to cook dinner without a glass of wine.<\/p>\n

Are there any foods that lend themselves to song?<\/p>\n

Kaye: All foods do.<\/p>\n

Ullman: I don\u2019t know about liver.<\/p>\n

Kaye: We need to write about chicken-fried steak.<\/p>\n

Ullman: We don\u2019t sit around and talk about the macrobiotic diet.<\/p>\n
